You run the risk of not achieving what you really want because you temper your wish to meet the definition of the word and an assumptions that you really need to know everything when you start.

Peter Drucker’s Management by Objectives concept gave us an expedient way to define our goals and it’s super effective.

As you recall the S.M.A.R.T. acronym makes an easy structure to shape our goals so they are achievable and so they move you forward.  You want to make sure your goal is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time based.

Now speaking to long term goal setting the hiccup occurs in defining attainable and sometimes realistic.  If you measure how attainable or realistic your goal is based on your current knowledge you may set a low bar for yourself and discover that you did not achieve as much as you thought once you complete on the goal.  If you consider your ability to find solutions and resources either in your own education or the skills and knowledge of others along with your ability to lead them you may find the space to set a much loftier goal.

The last thing you want is for your long term goal is to be “doable”.  When was the last time you celebrated achieving something doable?  Probably never.  Your goal should scare you and leave you a bit unsure as to how you are actually going to pull it off.  It’s then that you know that you are willing to rise and grow into the accomplishment.

Go be big and do big things in 2016!
